Seiko Presage, Prospex and Grand Seiko explained

Seiko sells several lines at different prices. This quick guide explains what each one is for, and why the model number matters.

If you like Seiko and want a watch made in Japan, check the exact model on its Amazon page. Look at the case back wording and the listing details.

See my picks on the Seiko and Grand Seiko page.

What is Seiko Presage?

Presage is Seiko's dressier line, known for automatic movements and fine dials. It is a popular first step into mechanical watches.

What is Seiko Prospex?

Prospex is Seiko's sports line, including dive and outdoor watches.

What is Grand Seiko?

Grand Seiko is Seiko's high end brand. It is built in Japan, with its mechanical and Spring Drive watches made at workshops in Shizukuishi and Shinshu.

Are all Seiko watches made in Japan?

No. Seiko makes watches in more than one country, so the model number matters. That is why I only list models whose Amazon listing says Japan, or whose maker builds that line only in Japan.
